High School Trip to Japan Interest Form

Thank you for your interest in the Salem-Ota Cultural Exchange High School trip to Japan! This program has been sending students to Japan as part of the official sister city relationship between Ota, Tokyo and Salem, Massachusetts for 30 years, and is a 501c-3 public charity organization. High School aged Salem Students have the opportunity to apply to be a part of this uniquely immersive experience, travel to Japan and be a part of a home-stay with a Japanese family for ten days during the summer. Salem-Ota Exchange Program Selection Procedures

Age: High School and recent High School graduates

Residence Requirement: Salem, MA unless the applicant’s family has hosted a child and the applicant lives outside of Salem.

Academic Requirement: Applicants will be representing the Salem-Ota Cultural Exchange and the city of Salem; therefore, applicants must be academically eligible (passing all core classes) and with no significant behavior issues. We reserve the right to verify with your school.

Dates: Tentative:August 2024. Precise dates await best flight times and pricing are available.

Please Note: First priority will be given to applicants whose family has hosted in the past or will be hosting Ota students this summer. If you are interested in joining the host family program, click here.

The Process

  1. Electronically, submit interest form below.
  2. Once SOCE confirms your eligibility, you will be contacted to apply.
  3. The application requires a short essay on what you hope to gain by participating in the exchange.
  4. Depending on the number of applicants we may conduct in-person interviews here in Salem.
