You will see America and your role as a global citizen in a whole new way.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><p dir=\"ltr\">It will build your empathy and global awareness.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><p dir=\"ltr\">You might learn a language or you will get better at charades!<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><p dir=\"ltr\">You will have a great story to tell in the \u201cWhat I did on my summer vacation\u201d essay!<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><p dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s an adventure!<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><p dir=\"ltr\">You will learn what it\u2019s like to move out of your comfort zone. This will build your confidence.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><p dir=\"ltr\">Your friendships with American and Japanese students will strengthen.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><p dir=\"ltr\">If you have hosted Japanese students before, you might get to see them again. You might even get to stay with them!<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><p dir=\"ltr\">You will create lasting memories.<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Salem students travel with adult chaperones from Salem to Ota for 10 incredible days. One night is spent in Sano Hall, Ota\u2019 residence for diplomats, seven with host families, one in a Kyoto hotel and one on Miyajima Island in a Ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn. The Salem students meet with the Mayor, ride a bullet train, participated in a tea ceremony, and visit museums, schools and temples including The Imperial Palace and the Peace Park and Museum in Hiroshima. &nbsp;Students are also guests of honor at Ota\u2019s Summer Festival where they&nbsp; ceremoniously light the fireworks on the dais with other schoolchildren in front of 200,000 people!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cost of the trip is estimated to be $3,800 per person (based on 15 participants) including airfare, ground transportation, accommodations and many of the meals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next student trip will be in August, 2026. Final dates have not yet been determined, but we are anticipating the trip to occur around August 6th &#8211; 16th<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Eligibility:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><p dir=\"ltr\">Students must be in high school.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><p dir=\"ltr\">First priority is given to students who have participated as homestay families.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><p dir=\"ltr\">Second priority is to families involved in Salem education, government or the Peabody Essex Museum.<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><p dir=\"ltr\">Third priority is Salem residents.<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why should you, an American student, travel to Japan?
